Ise shopping streets

Motif

Ise Jingu is one of the oldest and most important places in the Shinto religion and it is said that every Japanese person should go on a pilgrimage there at least once in their life. I found this antique obi in a second-hand store in Miyazaki, Kyushu, but the scene represented on it is probably the shopping streets around Ise Jingu in ancient times. At least this is what we guessed when we talked with the shop owner. Since there is no indication on the obi, and it is found without the original package or label, it is always hard to date them or recognize the historical scenes depicted on them. On the other hand, it leaves it open to interpretation, and we can still appreciate its beauty even with a big part of the mystery.

FABRIC

  • technique: jacquard

  • yarns: lamé & silk

On this obi, we can observe textured elements (scenes and characters) on a plain off-white silk background. The motifs are accurately detailed and the mix of coloured silk threads and guilded thread gives them an interesting texture.

The subtle gold lamé brightens up the motif.

When ordering a bumbag, please indicate your favourite part or colour so I can frame it onto your bag when I create it. On larger bags, the entire motif can be displayed.
