Mandarin ducks
MOTIF
We often see the majestic cranes oon bridal and other formal kimono, but mandarin ducks are also very symbolic birds. The ducks are represented among
curly waves and chrysanthemums, other popular patterns in the world of kimono. The background, a shimmering deep blue, has a subtle motif of ‘sayagata’: diagonally weaved Buddhist cross pattern. This pattern is also highly auspicious (see the close-up photo at the bottom of the page).
Mandarin ducks, or “oshidori” in Japanese, are the ultimate symbol of marriage as they live as a couple and they are known to let themselves die soon after if they loos their partners.
Like many animals, males are very colourful e not really outstanding, in order to hide from predators. On this fabric, both males and females have vibrant colours, but you can recognize the males by their fluffy plumage around the neck.
FABRIC
This obi is jacquard woven silk and lamé. Due to its high quality, the details of the pattern are very sharp and textured.
