Silver paper fans

MOTIF AND ORIGIN

This obi was created in Kyotoango, a city located at the very North of Kyoto prefecture, by the Sea of Japan. The idyllic town is very famous for its silk production. Throughout history, the fine silk Jacquard fabrics woven in Kyotango were supplying t most of Kyoto’s artisans. For example, the famous Kyo-yuzen (Yuzen dyeing technique as practised in Kyoto) were formerly woven in Kyotango (with neutral colour silk) to be sent to Kyoto city in order to be dyed by the different artisans.

But weavers of Kyotango also developed their own productions over years and this gorgeous obi is one example.

Tho motifs represent paper fans decorated with flowers of all seasons: cherry blossoms, camellias, plum blossoms, chrysanthemum, peonies. On the right-hand side, a frieze is composed of phoenixes flying amongst bell flowers, paulownias, bamboo grass and cloud-shaped pine branches.

TEXTILE

The fabric is composed of three different threads only. Two made of pure silk (a very pale almond-green and a darker one between grey and green) and one luxurious lamé thread.

When ordering a bumbag, it will not be possible to feature more than one paper fan on the bag. Please choose your favourite between the two represented on the fabric: the one on the left-hand side is decorated with camellias and plum blossoms, the one on the right-hand side is decorated with peonies and chrysanthemums.
