Uchiwa is a traditional type of fan that doesn’t fold, usually made with bamboo and paper. It is often decorated with a painting that can be displayed when the object isn’t used.

This one is covered with a woodblock illustration (replica) signed by the ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro (喜多川歌麿). He is particularly famous for his portraits of women (bijin-ga, meaning beautiful women) .

The bamboo handle is covered with lacquer.

Condition

Used item, in good condition. The top edge of the fan shows some sign of use (see in photo 4)
