Sunset on the mountain village (sold out)

MOTIF AND ORIGIN

Unlike most of the obis you can see in our collection, this one is only made of silk and doesn’t contain any metal threads. The design is exquisitely intricate and appears as if it was hand-painted or drawn. Initially, I thought the fabric was printed when I first saw it, but upon closer inspection, I realized it's actually finely woven.

The motif depicts a serene countryside landscape, featuring mountains adorned with cedar forests and bamboo groves. The scene is further enhanced by the presence of blooming trees and a few charming buildings. It is difficult to determine whether these structures are houses or castles. In rural areas of Japan, you may encounter delightful homes topped with decorative roof ornaments known as oni-gawara (Gobelin tiles). These ornaments often represent oni (ogres or demons) or koi fish when viewed from a distance, resembling distinctive horns.

Having lived in the Japanese countryside, I am intimately familiar with the picturesque hills covered in cedar and bamboo. When I gaze at this motif, it evokes fond memories of my time in Kyushu. Instead of relying on words, I would like to share some photos from past years that evoke a strong emotional connection to this beautiful scenery.
