Majolica (sold out)

“Majolica” (マジョリカ) is the Japanese for Mallorca, the Spanish island in the Mediterranean sea. Among may other aspects, Mallorca is famous for its ceramic, which is glazed with a highly glossed finish.

Majolica Omeshi is a kimono textile originally manufactured in Niigata prefecture and is composed of silk and lamé threads. When the fabric came on to the market for the first time in 1962, it was a huge success! One of their most popular designs was flower aranagements, similar to this one, recalling the style of Western wallpaper. They were produced in various colours, mixing tie-dye techniques and the luster was highly regarded. The fabric, so shiny that it almost seems to be wet, was named after Mallorca’s famous ceramic.

Flower arangements like this one are commonly seen in kimono and obi manufactured around the same time. They are very distinctive because of their symmetry. In Japanese Arts, natural patterns are mostly represented asymmetrically, in order to reveal the natural beauty of plants but also to create empty spaces on the artwork.

We can also observe horizontal and vertical lines - which are the structure of a wooden kimono stand rack - separating traditional Japanese patterns represented here, such as waves and pansies in diamond scales.
