Ginkaku-ji

銀閣寺

The Silver Pavilion

Motif

This is Kinkakuji’s little sibling, Ginkakuji. The silver pavilion. Its garden is easily recognizable with its pound and its pagoda. The building and the entire garden where originally designed as the retirement home of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa in the 15th century and was later converted as a zen temple. The pound by the temple was degn t reflect the full moon along with the silver roof and organize famouse moon-viewing parties. There are still some hosted nowadays and if you’re lucky to visit Kyoto at this time you might even be able to join!

As often on obi, the landscape is not realistically represented, instead it is arranged in a way that all elements are harmoniously fitting the vertical layout of obi. In this case the layout is very smart and allows all elements to be seen when the obi is tied in taiko musubi (a common formal styling).

Unlike the gold pavilion, this on hase only two stories and not three.

When ordering a Phone bag or a Bumbag, you can choose the details and colours of the motif you would like to feature on your bag. A bigger design like the Computer bag or the Weekender will allow the entire motif to show.
