Mauve phoenix (sold out)

MOTIF

This obi represents a Pheonix (in Japanese 鳳凰 “Hoo”) among chrysanthemums and peonies, which is a combination highly appreciated for celebratory garments. This imaginary bird creates many debates about its origins or history, but all agree that it is a mixture of different birds and animals.

Symbol of virtue, loyalty and wisdom, its original name in Japanese is a combination of “spirit of fire” and “female “. Various beliefs made the pheonix a favoured motif for celebration outfits. In the ’30s, the motif starts to appear more and more on women’s outfits, surrounded by Japanese auspicious patterns and flowers. Its colours were also toned down to better suit women’s outfits. I believe this obi is a perfect example of the ones created at this period, and I am almost certain it has been created in the ’30s or ’40s.

We can also see another common motif of this period: the girisha (Japanese old rikshaw) which the spouses would take on their wedding ceremony.

All elements displayed on this obi are arranged as if they were painted on cards with decorated frames. On the beige background, the pattern creates an illusion of gold flakes sprinkled around the cards.

TEXTILE

This obi is a Maru obi, the most formal amongst obi. It is woven jacquard silk. The silk threads create a subtle shine on the fabric and it has a smooth even touch, compared to most obi displayed in this catalogue which have a texture.

CUSTOM ORDER

When ordering a bumbag, keep in mind that it will not be possible to feature the entire motif on the same bag. Please indicate if you prefer to focus on the phoenix and the peonies (with pink and mauve hues) or the chrysanthemums and the rickshaw (with brown hues).
