Copper bamboo

Motif

Beautiful by its simplicity, the bamboo motif almost seems to light up as the light reflect on it. This is the magic of the hikihaku technique, a traditional method consisting of weaving metal foils or mother of pearls. The thin foils are applied on washi paper and then cut into extremely fine strips that are woven with the silk. Throughout the entire process, each strip maintains its precise position, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of the natural motif formed by the metal foil on the final obi.

When the light hits from another angle, the metal foil is more subtle and the warmth of the orange silk takes over.

If you are interested in hikinuki and have 9 mintues spare, I recommend watching this video by the V&A museum, I am in awe every time I watch it.
