When they are represented in pairs, like these two, the cranes (tsuru) are wishing for forever-lasting love and happiness in one’s home. Tsuru is amongst the most loyal birds. They never separate from a partner, even when migrating half of the globe to find their food. Such motifs are worn for wedding celebrations or wedding anniversaries celebrations and so on.
Here, the couple of birds are flying among plum branches in bloom (ume), pine and chrysanthemums which are other auspicious motifs, commonly used for ceremonial outfits.
The background is plain off-white. It is surprising to see such a colourful and shimmering obi that doesn’t use any lamé threads. The reflection of light and the brightness of the colours are only due to the silk threads properties.
